Known as Mama Miti, which means ‘Mother of Trees’, Professor Wangari Maathai was an environmental activist who inspired the planting of millions of trees across Africa. In 2004, Wangari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace, becoming the first African woman to win the prestigious prize.
