Historical explorer Ferdinand Magellan

This narrative text for year 5 and P6, linking to the topic forces, reveals the amazing journey made by Ferdinand Magellan. Five hundred years ago, he volunteered for what seemed an impossible voyage through shark-infested oceans in a ship that was rotting beneath him. He chose an unknown route by sailing east to west, trusting the ancient Greek theory that the world was a sphere. Magellan overcame lots of challenges and made new discoveries. Sadly, he didn’t make it to the end of the voyage but his crew did. They had completed the first voyage around the world - and proved that it really was a sphere. This led to more accurate maps of the world.
